SNAP DECISION

7 December 2016 Jim Harrison,

Picture the scene. It’s noon up near the Apple store by Central Park in New York. A queue snakes off into the distance. The Snapbot has landed. A credit card-operated vending machine that dispenses Snap’s new wireless Spectacles. The store, an instant pop-up, informed people it had landed via social. For the hardy, the wait is around 5 hours. And it’s cold in NYC. A gang of young teens patrol the line, checking-in with some apparently professional queuers who they are paying to wait. One by one, these stooges emerge from the store with Spectacles, handing them over to their pimps in return for a few dollars. Officially for sale at $129, the queue-averse can purchase from these enterprising teens for an additional $100. The free market economy is alive and well.
